SYNOPSIS

 

This season, the award-winning podcast The Nocturnists takes listeners on a captivating journey through seven episodes that delve into the personal and professional rebirths of those deeply embedded in healthcare. Recorded live in Minneapolis at the Parkway Theatre in collaboration with the Center for the Art of Medicine at the University of Minnesota (CFAM), these narratives explore themes of discovery, loss, love, and the serendipitous paths to healing.

Season 6 features powerful stories of personal discovery, loss, love, and the unexpected paths to healing. From infectious disease/HIV physician Dr. Meghan Rothenberger's journey to find herself again after a series of losses, to Med-Peds Hospitalists, Dr. Anthony Williams redefining his role as a caretaker through the lens of race and masculinity; from fourth year med student Peter Park finding a connection to his late grandfather through a cadaver in his medical school, to  Pathologist Dr. Sue Wheaton reflecting on her relationship with her trailblazing mother; and from Psychiatrist Dr. Carson Brown confronting family patterns using her own clinical advice,  to to Med-Peds Primary Care Physician Dr. Tiffany Albrecht balancing grief with joy, and Med-Peds primary care physician Dr. Augie Lindmark engaging in conversations about mortality with his father—each episode is a testament to the resilience and complexity of the human spirit.

Emily Silverman is an internal medicine physician at UCSF and Creator of The Nocturnists. Her writing has been supported by MacDowell and published in The New York Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review, JAMA, CHEST, McSweeneys, and more. She was the Hellman Artist-in-Residency at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center in 2020 and served on the COVID Crisis Group, which recently published the book, "Lessons from the COVID War." She lives with her husband and daughter in San Francisco, and tweets @ESilvermanMD.

Meghan Rothenberger She says, Well, we're gonna have to activate the protocol. And I say, I'm sorry, what's the protocol and she says the lost dog protocol! And before I can ask her what that is, she hangs up.
