Storytelling Workshop:

Uncertainty in Medicine

Dear Bay Area clinicians and patients,

You’re invited to join The Nocturnists for a FREE in-person storytelling workshop at UCSF on the evening of Thursday, March 14th, on the theme of “Uncertainty in Medicine.”

Uncertainty is everywhere in healthcare, for both clinicians and patients, and has huge implications in our personal and professional lives. But we rarely speak about it, as it can make us and others uncomfortable.

We’re thrilled to have received support from the ABIM Foundation to develop a documentary podcast series on the topic of “uncertainty in medicine,” in collaboration with Arts Practica. Currently we are in the research phase of the project, collecting perspectives about how, where and why uncertainty arises in clinical encounters.

During this workshop, you’ll participate in a facilitated discussion about uncertainty in medicine, practice basic storytelling skills, and have the opportunity to share an uncertainty story with The Nocturnists team in a recorded format for possible inclusion in the podcast.

The workshop will be facilitated by The Nocturnists Creator and Host Dr. Emily Silverman, and The Nocturnists Head of Story Development, Molly Rose Williams.

Location:

Thursday, March 14, 5:30-9:00pm

UCSF Kalmanovitz Library (530 Parnassus Avenue, San Francisco)

2nd floor, Room CL220 & 223

Agenda:

5:30-6:00pm: Meet & greet (pizza will be provided)

6:00-7:00pm: Intro to storytelling and group dialogue about “uncertainty in medicine”

7:00-9:00pm: Story booth (individual story recordings)

Questions to ponder in advance of the workshop:

  • Tell us about a time when uncertainty loomed large for you in healthcare. Where did the uncertainty arise from? What did it feel like? What did you do or not do about it?

  • Who was there for you in your uncertainty, or not there? What happened next?

  • What were the factors that shaped your experience?

  • What challenges did uncertainty present? What were its gifts?

  • Did certainty ever emerge? If so, what came after?

You can register for the workshop HERE. For any questions, email uncertainty@thenocturnists.com.

Warm regards,

The Nocturnists Team
