Uncertainty in Medicine:

Call for Stories

The project

We are delighted to announce that The Nocturnists — in collaboration with Arts Practica, and with generous support from the ABIM Foundation, Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation — is seeking stories for a new podcast series on the theme of "Uncertainty in Medicine."

Call for stories

Uncertainty is a fundamental part of healthcare, and the ways we handle it inform both the craft of clinicians, and patients’ healthcare journeys.

But the topic goes largely unacknowledged in medical training, as recognizing it can feel taboo or problematic.

We’re inviting both clinicians and patients to submit their “uncertainty” stories for a new documentary podcast series, slated to air in 2025.

Some questions to think about include:

  • Tell us about a time when uncertainty loomed large for you in healthcare. Where did the uncertainty arise from? What did it feel like? What did you do or not do about it?

  • Who was there for you in your uncertainty, or not there? What happened next?

  • What were the factors that shaped your experience?

  • What challenges did uncertainty present? What were its gifts?

  • Did certainty ever emerge? If so, what came after?

Please submit your story here before Sunday, March 24th at midnight PST.
